With easy-to-understand explanations of the basic concepts, Seismic Design of Foundations examines recent and worldwide research outputs and post-earthquake reconnaissance case studies, and offers practical means of applying them to the real world. Each case study also provides worked examples of new and innovative findings that reveal background information behind the codes of practice in various parts of the world as well as the lessons learned from recent large-scale earthquakes.

This book aims to

  • explain the latest state-of-the-art research on seismic design of foundations and related issues
  • breakdown and explain the codes of practice into easy-to-understand concepts
  • showcase worked examples at the end of each chapter highlighting the concepts covered
  • cover case studies from all over the world, including Japan, New Zealand, India and Taiwan amongst others.

Seismic Design of Foundations presents state-of-the-art information which will be ideal for any student studying postgraduate civil engineering or structural engineering as well as researchers and practitioners working in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering.

Read a blog by the authors can we only prepare for disasters we have experienced before to find out about the lessons learnt from past disasters and how we can mitigate their impact going forward.

Book Reviews

Seismic Design of Foundation: Concepts and Applications justifies its title by delivering a solid exposition of theory along with practical worked out examples that are required for designing the foundations of different structures like buildings and bridges subjected to seismic loading. This book is an excellent resource for students, educators, researchers, and practicing structural, geotechnical and earthquake engineers, and is an amalgamation of theoretical concepts, case studies and practical problems that describe the whole process of seismic analysis and design of foundations in details. The structure of the book is thoughtfully designed starting with basic engineering seismology, going through ground response analysis and liquefaction, and, finally, culminating in the analysis of shallow and deep foundations and their designs following different available codes of practice.

The book elaborately provides the concepts related to the seismic design of foundations. The gradual building up of the theories and concepts through the different chapters, and the completeness of the content with case studies and numerical examples make this a self-study book. Thus, the book can be an effective pedagogical tool for the graduate students that have a basic understanding of structural mechanics and vibration theories. This book can also be a useful document for the structural and geotechnical designers because it covers detailed analysis procedures, practical case studies, relevant references from different standard codes, and references to commercial software packages. Researchers in the fields of liquefaction and earthquake geotechnical engineering will also find the book helpful as it contains in-depth description of the latest research along with a set of relevant references.

This book is a comprehensive contribution to the state-of-the-art design of building foundations that are prone to seismic effects. Of particular emphasis in this book is the seismic design of pile foundation that is prone to subsoil liquefaction and loss of bearing capacity. This loss is significant in the lateral direction and design methodology against lateral load is described in this book. Readers will learn from example calculations that are distributed on many topics in many sections of this book.
